a sunburnt first day

Hello friends! The following is my first entry as accounted in my travel journal from last night in the tent. We are sipping coffee and uploading entries at the Brown Dog Cafe in Buena Vista, CO. Happy reading!

Day One; June 30th 2014

Despite a crippling fear of the dark (on my behalf) we have made it. Home sweet home is currently a tent somewhere in the San Isabel National Forest. [?] I should really know for sure, but after a day of caravanning across this great state just knowing we are near Buena Vista works for me. *Verbal confirmation of the San Isabel location- thanks Mickey!* The stars are bright and prick the darkness leaving trails of wet star paint throughout the night sky- it really is something else.
We hiked Brown's Creek Trail until it hit the Colorado Trail in the Brown's Canyon Area. The streams are ice cold and refreshing to wade in. However, after one of the steepest hikes I have ever done I must come to terms with the fact that Chacos, while infinitely practical, are not always a sound footwear choice. Close toed shoes it is from here on out, sweaty feet and all. I basically just fell down the trail wearing Chacos.

I think I am still in denial that the trip has really begun and I'm free! Really free- we're camping for free! It feels more like a weekend trip (even if it is a Monday) and as if it will be over soon- when actually it has just begun! So far I am cherishing every moment. I am grateful to be in a meadow among the wildflowers and to have a camping partner so knowledgeable of bear bags and how to warn them of our presence. As it turns out, I actually am also terrified of bears (and mountain lions) and especially wary of them in the dark.
Here in the tent, though, writing by lantern light, listening to the rustle of the forest canopy I feel safe and warm. (Also with a little help from the whiskey.) I can't believe how blessed I am to live a life I always longed to write about. The surreal reality is one to relish in and I wouldn't trade my life for a million moons.
I would like to extend a gracious thanks to all of the beautiful, caring souls I have met along the way, how lucky I have been to have crossed paths with you all. And a most warm goodbye to the friends made in Fort Collins, and to the city. Thank you for your hospitality and I will see you again.
I send love to my beautiful family and friends in Charlotte, NC. (And all over the world.) Those who shaped me shine through on a daily basis and I am eternally grateful. I am blessed with the most loving and understanding family who have supported me always and I can't thank y'all enough- or give you enough love <3 !
I am so thrilled to be alive and I can't wait for the misadventures July First has in store for us.
